DBT Mental Health Program in Maine

Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) used to help patients cope with stress, manage their emotions, and improve interpersonal relationships.
The purpose of DBT is to bring two opposing ideas – acceptance and change – into therapy, hence the word dialectical. Other conditions DBT mental health program in Maine can treat include bipolar disorder, eating disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use disorder.

How Does DBT Work?

While undergoing DBT, you will be introduced to four concepts. The first is mindfulness. It helps people break free from the chains of the bitter past experiences holding them back. Instead of fixating on the past, it encourages patients to ‘live in the moment.’ The second is called interpersonal effectiveness. As the name suggests, it’s all about navigating your relationships and learning how to say no without creating any negative feelings in the other person.
In the third concept, distress tolerance, you’ll learn how to accept your current situation. Apart from that, it also teaches you a few techniques for getting yourself out of distressing situations without creating any feelings of hostility towards the other person. The final concept – emotion regulation – allows you to become more emotionally intelligent. You’ll be able to adjust your negative emotions, such as anger, depression, anxiety, and frustration, in such a way that it doesn’t produce any negative impact on your life.

What Are the Techniques Used In DBT?

DBT teaches the above-mentioned four concepts using the following three approaches:

  • One-On-One Therapy

In one-on-one therapy, the patient would be required to attend hour-long sessions with a qualified therapist. During these sessions, you’ll learn how to develop effective life skills and deal with negative thoughts and feelings.

  • Skills Training

The skills training approach works similarly to an online university class. Patients would need to complete a 24-week curriculum where they’ll be taught and asked to practice different skills with other people.
